Badminton at Paris 2024: An Overview
The 2024 Paris Olympics will mark the ninth time badminton is being held as an Olympic medal sport. The badminton competition will feature 172 players competing across five categories: men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. The event is scheduled to take place from 27 July to 5 August 2024 at the Porte de la Chapelle Arena in Paris.
Qualification Timeline
The qualification period for the Paris 2024 Olympics spans from 1 May 2023 to 28 April 2024. Key dates in the qualification process include:
- 15 January 2024: Deadline for National Olympic Committees (NOCs) to submit requests for Universality Places.
- 30 April 2024: Publication of the Race to Paris Ranking Lists.
- 10 May 2024: Badminton World Federation (BWF) to inform NOCs/National Federations (NFs) of their allocated quota places.
- 24 May 2024: NOCs to confirm in writing to BWF the use of allocated quota places.
- 5 July 2024: Deadline for BWF to reallocate all unused quota places.
- 8 July 2024: Deadline for Paris 2024 Entries.
Qualification Criteria
For Singles: The BWF 'Race to Paris Ranking List' as of 30 April 2024 will be used to allocate 35 individual quota places per gender, including Continental Representation Places. Each singles event will have at least two athletes from each of the five BWF Continental Confederations, provided they are ranked between 1-250 in the BWF Race to Paris Ranking list. An NOC cannot qualify athletes/pairs in more than two events through the Continental Representation Place system.
For Doubles: The 'Race to Paris Ranking Lists' of 30 April 2024 will be used to allocate 48 pairs quota places to the 16 highest-ranked pairs in each event, including Continental Representation Places. Each doubles event will have at least one pair from each of the five BWF Continental Confederations, provided they are ranked within the top 50 in the BWF 'Race to Paris Ranking Lists'. An NOC cannot qualify athletes/pairs in more than two events through the Continental Representation Place system.
Universality Places
Four Universality Places are available for eligible NOCs: two in men’s singles and two in women’s singles. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will invite all eligible NOCs to submit their requests for Universality Places by 15 January 2024.
